If Pete Townsend, Keith Moon and co. created one of the great rock bands of the Sixties and Seventies, fast-forward to the 21st century and Mongolia’s home-grown heavy metal rockers The Hu are now known worldwide.  With luck, you might just catch them next year in a reprise of last month’s electrifying opening bash at the Naadam Festival! Peter Jackson – if you make another LOR movie we think you may wnat your casting manager to interview this group!

This year’s opening festivities featured Mongolia’s 21st-century cultural heroes, the uniquely Mongolian heavy metal band The Hu – winners of the Genghis Khan Award, no less!

Founded in 2016, The HU blends heavy metal and traditional Mongol throat singing.

Their first two videos (“Yuve Yuve Yu” and “Wolf Totem”) immediately went viral, garnering the band over 100 million views.

The Hu have toured internationally and began an Australian tour earlier this year, cut short by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The band’s name is the Mongolian root word for human being. They call their style “Hunnu Rock”…inspired by the Hunnu, an ancient Mongol empire known as the Huns by fearful Europeans. Their lyrics can include old Mongol war cries and poetry.  The band’s music incorporates traditional Mongol instrumentation like the Morin Khuur (horse head fiddle), Tovshuur (Mongol guitar), Tumur Khuur (jaw harp), guttural throat singing and the bombastic bass and drums of rock music.
