Barcelona, a destination hotspot for overtourism, now have plans to close all holiday apartments in the city within the next four years.
In April, tens of thousands of residents across Spain’s Canary Islands gathered to protest against the new term, ‘overtourism’. They called for urgent limitations on visitor numbers and a halt to what they deem to be uncontrolled development.
Elsewhere in Europe, Amsterdam recently unveiled immediate plans to stop overtourism by limiting the number of river cruises entering its waterways and halting new hotel construction, along with closing private home tourist rentals in the central historical area.
Venice has become the first city in the world to implement a tourist entry payment to manage the overwhelming number of visitors crowding its iconic canals.
